One of the biggest questions I hear from entrepreneurs is: “Okay, but how do I know what business season I’m in?”

Because let’s be honest, when you’re unclear about your season, you make decisions from confusion instead of clarity. And confused decisions rarely serve you well.

In this third episode of the Built to Flow Foundations Series, I’ll show you how to recognize the signals of your current business season, spot the signs of transition, and use that awareness to make better decisions right now.

Why Knowing Your Season Matters

Traditional business advice assumes that growth is always the goal. But not every season is about scaling. Some seasons call for stabilizing, simplifying, or evolving.

When you don’t know your season, you risk:

  • Forcing yourself into Expansion when you’re already maxed out.
  • Staying stuck in Contraction because you don’t recognize the shift into Recalibration.
  • Ignoring the need for Integration and burning out before the next wave of growth.

Knowing your season isn’t just self-awareness, it’s strategy.

Step 1: Assess Your Energy

Your energy is often the first and clearest signal of your season.

  • Expansion feels energized, inspired, and outward-focused.
  • Integration feels steady, grounded, and intentional.
  • Contraction feels tender, protective, or heavy.
  • Recalibration feels messy but clarifying, like you’re evolving into something new.

If you keep telling yourself “I should launch,” but the thought makes your whole body feel heavy, that’s not Expansion, it’s probably Contraction.

Take a moment right now to check in: what is your energy telling you?

Step 2: Check Your Capacity

Capacity is about what you can hold, not what you wish you could hold.

  • Expansion happens when you have space to add more.
  • Integration is about sustaining what already exists.
  • Contraction is when you’re maxed out and need to protect your energy.
  • Recalibration is when your capacity is shifting because you’re redesigning the way you work.

Ask yourself: Do I feel like I have room to take on more, or do I need to protect what I already have?

Step 3: Look for Transition Signals

Seasons aren’t always clear-cut. Sometimes you’re in between—like the moment when winter thaws but spring hasn’t fully arrived.

Here are a few signals of transition:

  • You’ve been in Expansion but exhaustion is creeping in → you’re moving toward Contraction.
  • You’ve been simplifying in Contraction but now feel restless → you’re heading toward Recalibration.
  • You’ve been reworking your model in Recalibration and things finally feel clear → you’re entering Integration.
  • You’ve been steady in Integration and feel momentum sparking again → you’re shifting into Expansion.

Recognizing these transitions early helps you adjust before you burn out or miss opportunities.

Step 4: Ask the Right Questions

Sometimes clarity comes from asking yourself simple but powerful questions:

  • Expansion: Do I have energy for growth? Am I excited about new opportunities?
  • Integration: Do I need to stabilize what I’ve already built? Are my systems working?
  • Contraction: Do I need to protect my energy? What can I simplify or pause?
  • Recalibration: What’s no longer working? What have I outgrown? What needs to shift?

Your answers to these questions will usually reveal your true season.

An Example in Practice

Let’s say Jasmine, a creative entrepreneur, has been in full Expansion—launching, networking, growing. But lately, she’s exhausted.

When she checks in with her energy, it feels heavy. Her capacity is maxed out. That’s a signal she’s entering Contraction.

Instead of pushing through with another launch, Jasmine pulls back. She simplifies her schedule, protects her energy, and focuses only on what sustains her.

By honoring that shift, she avoids burnout and sets herself up to step into Recalibration when the time is right.

Why This Matters

Knowing your season doesn’t mean you’ll never feel pressure or complexity. Life is full of nuance. Not everyone has the privilege to stop working during Contraction, for example.

But even within those realities, honoring your season means you stop fighting yourself. You stop trying to fit into someone else’s timeline. You start making decisions from clarity, not confusion.

That’s how you lead your business in rhythm with your life.

“You don’t need to wonder if you’re on the right track, you just need to know your season.”
