Why I'm Writing This Book Now

I’ve started a book more than once. A folder of outlines, a few chapters, a lot of good intentions. Every time, something else needed me more. A client. A team. My kids. A season I didn’t see coming.

So why now?

Honestly, because I finally have something I can’t not write.

The book I needed

For most of my 22 years in business, the advice I found had one setting: grow. More clients, more revenue, more reach. And there were years when that was exactly right for me. But there were also years when growing was the last thing my business or my family needed.

When our daughter London was sick, I didn’t need a growth plan. I needed a way to keep a business running while my life was somewhere else entirely. When I stepped away to grieve, I needed permission to let things slow down without feeling like I was failing. When Cole and I opened the law firm, I needed to build something new while still showing up for the work I already had.

None of the books on my shelf were written for those seasons. So I’m writing the one I wish I’d had.

What it’s about

Built to Flow: Grow Through Every Business Season is about the seasons every business moves through. Some ask you to grow. Some ask you to pull back. Some ask you to rethink what you’re building. Some ask you to settle in and deepen what’s already working.

Every one of those seasons can be a good one, if you know which one you’re in and what it’s asking of you.

It’s part strategy, part story. The strategy comes from 16 years of advising business owners. The story comes from living through every one of those seasons myself, sometimes on purpose and sometimes not.

Why “grow through”

I went back and forth on the subtitle. I kept landing on “grow through” because it means two things at once.

It means growing your business, yes. But it also means getting through a season and coming out stronger on the other side. Some of my most important growth as an owner happened in years when the numbers didn’t move at all.

What’s next

I’m writing now, and I’ll share the process here as I go: what I’m working on, what I’m cutting, and what I’m learning about writing a book while running two businesses and raising two kids.
